I cut a batch of basil today from the back, brought it in to wash for tonight's dinner and all a sudden out the basil leafs hops out this little baby grasshopper so small it fit atop a pencil eraser! first time I ever seen one that small so i took some photos.

I had ordered it a few days ago immediately after watching the video I posted on here, about Hirschfeld. I've never been the type of person who was interested in the history of art or anything like that, matter of fact the only other artist documentary I own is the Frazetta Fire and Ice 2 disc.
and now I find myself interested in finding out about every artist I've ever liked!

what I discovered interesting is that I find a little bit of myself in every different documentary, I can relate in some way or another with these artist including the fact that we all tend to be very solitary figures, we sit alone with our thoughts huddled over paper at our work station, always with our minds set on drawing.

anywho, I quite enjoyed this one, pick it up if you get a chance. the line king

just finished watching the Nicolas Marlet workshop over at CGMW it was very interesting to see his approach to drawing, It was just a video of him drawing there was no commentary, just a vid of him doing his thing, it left me with a feeling of more to be desired but great non the less. If your a fan of his work I'd recommend you sign up to watch him work.

I received some sketchcards I ordered from amazon the other day, not sure how I feel about them yet. The difference here is the the cards are textured so pencil lines don't go down as smoothly and the marker tends to bleed out a little more.

also I have not forgotten the robin hood character, tho I'm not feeling the blue lines here, I think I'll switch back to red.

So heres the Deal hopefully someone will roll with me on this, it works much like collecting cards when you were a kid (or like me you still buy baseball cards) except your trying to collect artist cards from around the globe! you can purchase these blank cards at your local art store or you may create your own using the specific trading card dimensions 2.5" x 3.5" .

1. create a card and and another artist creates a card. could be anything that you choose to draw (but it MUST be drawn)

2. trade cards with one another over postal mail (you must stick to the code and commit to trading and not screw anyone)

3. on back of card you must write down your name, (doesn't have to be your real name) the link to your website, state, country, card number, or email if you choose.

4. trade with various artists you meet from around the world and share photos of your awesome collection with people.

I'm trying to work on this next pose here, still making small adjustments that can make it much stronger this is generally what the early stages of my work look like. but since I'm trying a bit more here I really need to focus on exaggerating the gesture next. I find it easier when I lay down a semi generic pose and build on top of that, but I'm trying here so go easy on me. ;)

I was working on sketches with a pentel brush pen and I didn't secure the new cartridge very well, when I went to squeeze for more ink the case popped open causing a catastrophe on a couple of blank pages. :( had to rip out couple pages before the ink bled through any more good ones.

Here is an example of how to collect your reference images, these were collected from the yahoo homepage, I simply take a snapshot of the available portraits, and compile them in a 5x9 photoshop document and desaturate the color. I will usually fill it up and label it to store in a handy file on my hard drive. Don’t forget to back your library up as accidents like harddrive crashes happen and there goes all your images and hard work. Now your ready to handle a day with a case of artist block, just open a photo and start having fun drawing.

Modbook vs iPad

Modbook wins... Fatality!. iPad sucks in my opinion and thats final. People should stop complaining to apple and just get a Modbook, apparently Apple thinks the market isn't large enough to produce a Mac tablet. so....WTF?.... Axiotron picks up their slack, good for you Axiotron! the news is there will eventually be a 15" Macbook Pro Mod too, but you better start saving.
it will run you about 5g's but the 13" mod available now is a great deal more afordable, at $1,700 for the complete or about $700 to transform your current 13" into one.

I got to try one at a comiccon back in I think it was 2004 when it was first announce, and the response to pen was amazing. now its not a touchscreen let that be clear, so you don't have to worry about accidently pushing buttons and opening applications while your palm rests on the screen when drawing.

its good to see where tech is headed for these types of products so a bright future is at hand for us " i want everything in the grasp of my hand-artist on the go".

so scratch my last complaint about the blending. this is my last post for today i gotta get some sleep...yeah right i'll probably be sketching in bed :D

Art Academy First Semester
I went through and tried a couple of the lessons and posted my artwork for you guys to see what it looks like.
it has a great feature in which you can save your artwork to your SD card or use photos from your album to use as subjects in Free Paint Mode, like i did with the parrot photo i took a while back at the Aquarium of the Pacific.

though it does not show it here you can also use a grid option that overlays the photo so you can sketch with the right proportions. Take that and shuv it PSP! just kidding i love my PSP too.

it takes a bit of time to get used to the feel of it, only drawback for me was that there is no pressure sensitivity for the stylus.
and a blend tool wouldn't of hurt either. other than that its a ton of fun and it might just replace my travel sketchbook for a while
since its got all the tools i need in a handheld.

Last night i stumbled on to some great sketch and paint Apps for Nintendo DSI, Nintendo DS, iPhone and iPod Touch.
they have been out for a while but i didn't know of them till now so for those late like me here you go.

DSI Only:: I downloaded Art Academy First Semester from the DSIware store, and its a pretty great program/game, more here :note: there is also Art Academy Second Semester. DSI

ok so moving on to the App for DS, iPhone and iPod Touch, If you want something a little more advanced to the photoshop feel
id go with this one, keep in mind the DS one is a homebrew APP so there will be alot of custom installation, all which can be found here, the iphone app you can download off the apps store duh.
